1. Served as the 25th President of the United States, William McKinley is famous for leading the country through the Spanish-American War. He served in the office from 1897 to 1901 until he was assassinated.
2. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War under Rutherford Hayes. His political career started in 1869 and he soon rose in the ranks of the Republican Party winning election to the Congress in 1876.
3. McKinley served as the governor of Ohio for two terms and due to the paralyzing economic situation created after the Panic of 1893, Republicans gained their popularity and McKinley won the presidential nomination in 1896.
4. McKinley`s victory was regarded as one of the biggest victories in 25 years with McKinley winning popular vote alongside electoral votes. He worked to grow the domestic industry by introducing the highest protective tariffs in America.
5. McKinley`s legacy was determined by the position of America in foreign affairs when the country won the Spanish-American war where they occupied Puerto Rico and seized Manila in Philippines.
6. McKinley`s administration influenced the “Open Door” policy which allowed American association to flourish its commercial interests in China guaranteeing strong position of America in World Market. He also backed up the policy of sending American troops to stop the Boxer Rebellion in China.
7. McKinley got reelected in the elections of 1900 with popular vote again. He was chosen again for his efforts towards economic prosperity but he soon saw the darkness of death when he was assassinated by an unemployed Detroit mill worker.
