The Indian flag is once again waving up high at an international athletic championship. And this time, creating history at the IAAF World Under-20 Athletics Championships, is Hima Das who earned the top spot at women’s 400m sprint, making her the first Indian woman to clench this honour.
Here are 7 facts about this trailblazer, Hima Das :
1. Started From the Bottom :
Hima, unlike most of her competitors, aced the track without professional coaching or fancy sports gears. Coming from a modest background, her ardent commitment the last two years towards running has brought her where she is today.
2. Not Just a Sports Person :
The country has more reasons to be proud of Hima than for her golden win. The 18-year-old Assamese girl from Dhing is known for fighting local liquor vends in her village and for voicing against anything illegal. It is no surprise she is fondly called “The Dhing Express”.
3. More Laurels :
Apart from her recent win, Hima came fifth at last year’s 200m sprint at the World Youth Athletics in Nairobi. She bagged a win at her first 400m race at the Federation Cup and also came sixth at this year’s Commonwealth Games.
4. A Different Dream :
India’s athletic gem is a huge football buff and trained to become a professional player. She was a striker at a local football club in her village and was known for her winning goals, until two years ago, when she decided to take the athletic road.
5. Bigger, Better Records :
Apart from her newly praised record running time of 51.46 seconds, Hima is known for a startling 51.30 seconds win at this year’s Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and a 51.13 finish at an inter-state championship in Guwahati.
6. Her Family, Her Strength :
Hima’s parents Ronjit and Jomali Das have been her strongest supporters throughout her athletics journey. The youngest of her family’s five kids, Hima would support her father at farming and would even drive his tractor around.
7. Coach to the Win :
Hima credits all her win to her coach Nipon Das. After he realised her raw talent, it was on his insistence that Hima left her village to move closer to Guwahati, to get closer to her dream.
