Socrates was one of the top-notch classical Greek philosophers of his time. He was the first moral philosopher of the Western ethical tradition. He is also known to be one of the founders of Western philosophy.

He Made No Writings

No personal records of Socrates exist. You are safe to say that he was a mysterious figure. He is only known through the accounts given by his students Plato and Xenophon. The most extensive account of his life, to have survived the ancient time comes from Plato.

The Socratic Problem

Socrates wrote down none of his teachings and philosophy. This has made information about him and his belief a little sketchy. At some point, the works attributed to him contradict each other. This is what has become the Socratic problem.

Profession

Socrates worked as a stonemason before he became a philosopher. He is believed to have constructed the statue of the Three Graces. This status was cited near the Acropolis until it was brought down in the 2nd century.

The Death of Socrates

Socrates was accused of not recognising the gods of the state. He was also a social and moral critic who did not conform to the status quo of the time. In the presence juries, he was accused of corrupting the youth with his believes. He was sentenced to death and was given a mixture containing hemlock.

Personal Life

Born in Alopeke, Socrates was a native of the Antiochis tribe. He was married to Xanthippe, who was said to have a very bad temperament. The couple had three sons namely Lamprocles, Sophroniscus and Menexenus.

He Turned Down Escape Plans

After Socrates was sentenced to death, his friend Crito planned for his escape from prison. His friends and followers were able to bribe the prison guides to ensure his escape. However, he chose to stay and face his fate, as an escape would mean a fear of death.

Last Words

Socrates had something to say to his friend Crito his death. According to translations, he said, “Crito, we owe a cock to Asclepius. Please, don’t forget to pay the debt.” There are different translations of his last words before he died.
