Narendra Modi is the 14th and the current Prime Minister of India. He received the highest number of votes ever since the 1984 election. Modi is also the first Prime Minister to be born in an independent India.

1) Prime Minister

Modi was elected to the office of Prime Minister of India in 26th May, 2014. He contested on the ticket of the BJP during the general election. The party had an overwhelming victory since 1984. His ratings have continued to rise ever since his coming to power.

2) Political Positions

Before rising to become the Prime Minister, Modi served in various political positions. From 7 October 2001 to 22 May 2014, he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. He also served as the Member of Parliament for Varanasi.

3) He was an average student and tea seller

Modi was not an excellent student but an average one. During his higher secondary education, he was described as a keen debater and a lover of theatre. This interest is his has greatly influenced his political life. Modi has been at service since his childhood. Coming from a poor family background, he helped his father to sell tea. As he gained enough experience, he began to run his own stall alongside his brother.

4) He rejected his arranged Marriage

According to culture and norms at the time, the family of Modi had an arranged marriage for him. However, he rejected the marriage and had to leave home. He left home for two years travelling around India. Most of his visits were to religious centres.

5) Controversies

Modi has been a subject of many controversies due to his actions and inactions. Domestically, he is critically scrutinised for his Hindu nationalist believes. His role in the Gujarat riots in 2002 is seen as an act of exclusionary social agenda. The US government refused to issues him a diplomatic visa in 2005. The denial was due to US Immigration and Nationality Act. With this, the visa, he already had was also invalidated.

6) He Almost Died as a Child

A crocodile attacked Modi, at the Shamishtha Lake during his childhood days. Luckily for him, he survived the attack even though he was seriously injured. Modi went to the lake for a regular play.

7) A Member of RSS since age 8

Modi joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) when he was just eight years old. He started to attend local training sessions and that was where he met Lakshmanrao Inamder. Inamder inducted Modi into balswayamsevak (junior cadet) for RSS and served as his mentor.
