Born to Filipino and American parents, Murphy started his education at School of the Madeleine in Berkley. He continued at Mary’s College High School and then to Stanford University. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematical and Computational Science in 2010.

Murphy partnered with his two friends Evans Spiegel and Reggie Brown to found Snap Inc. (formerly Snapchat Inc.) a Multinational technology and social media company in America. The three were at the time students at Standard University. While there, he was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity with Reggie Brown and Evans Spiegel. Murphy served as the CTO of the company.
Spiegel and Murphy unsuccessfully started with the website Future Freshman, which advised high school students and helped them in applying to colleges. At that time, Murphy had started the disappearing-image messaging app, Picaboo. This app later became Snapchat in 2011. After graduating from school, he worked as a software engineer at Ravel Systems.
